The Society of Authors

This is the trade union for authors; both traditionally and self-published authors can join. The Society provides advice, resources and events both online and in person, and has a number of local and specialist groups.  

The Alliance of Independent Authors

A global membership association for self-publishing authors, offering advice and advocacy for self-publishing authors. Membership gives access to private forums, contract advice, discounts, guidebooks and more. 

The Writers' and Artists' Yearbook

The Yearbook is published in physical form but there's also a wealth of resources online including resources, editing services and advice on every aspect of publishing.  The book contains over 80 articles full of inspirational and practical guidance, and a comprehensive list of over 3,700 publishing industry contacts.  Online, you can subscribe for access to the full listings. 

Reedsy

At Reedsy you can find and engage professional help to produce your book: cover designers, editors, copy editors, proofreaders, typesetters, web designers, publicists. After entering details of your project you can select up to six providers in any category, free of charge, and receive quotations from them before choosing who you want to work with.

Prepare to Publish

Andrew Chapman specialises in non-fiction consultancy and design but also offers typesetting services to fiction authors and independent publishers. 

The Arvon Foundation

Arvon has three residential centres, in Yorkshire, Devon and Shropshire, and also runs Arvon At Home. Courses and retreats led by highly acclaimed writers span poetry to playwriting, song to screenplay, fact to fiction, starting to finishing. Grants are available for those who need help with course fees. 

Mslexia

A quarterly magazine for women who write - where every reader is a potential contributor too. There are regular competitions, Q&As led by industry experts and links to agents. Subscribe to join the online community The Salon, with regular events and sessions including Agent Extravaganza - pitching your work directly to top agents.
